The San Diego Chargers have claimed former San Diego State running back Ronnie Hillman.

To make room for Hillman, wide receiver Griff Whalen was waived from the team.

In acquiring Hillman, the Chargers bring in a back who can provide some speed and also be a decent option on third down. The former Aztec was released by the Broncos at the start of the 2016 season. He was claimed by the Vikings where he has appeared in five games for the Vikings, getting little to no playing time.

At the age of 25, Hillman is still pretty young. He could have a decent resurgence with the Bolts. With only Kenneth Farrow at running back behind Melvin Gordon, he certainly has the opportunity to assert himself with the Chargers. Expect Hillman to get reps as a third down back, similar to how the Chargers intended to use Dexter McCluster before his injury. What he does with that playing time is entirely up to him.

With Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver both injured for the second straight year, it is conceivable that the team may move on from both running backs. Hillman could take advantage of the situation and endear himself to the Chargers’ coaching staff. Watch him closely these last six games. He should be running with a purpose.

The Chargers had to move on from Griff Whalen and most of the fan base is asking… what took so long? Whalen looked lost on the field and played way too often. The team has been decimated by injuries this season. Hopefully they found a gem in Hillman. This could be his last opportunity to play in the league.
