The Tijuana Xolos played their second game in the Copa MX 2019-2020 campaign this Tuesday, Aug. 13, against Queretaro at the Estadio Corregidora. The Xoloitzcuintles had defeated Queretaro in their first Copa MX game at the Estadio Caliente but were unable to do the same away from home.

Manager Oscar Pareja used an alternate lineup as expected, featuring youngsters like Luis Gamiz and Antonio Nava and some more experienced players like Angel Sepulveda and Luis Michel as well. Pareja even used some Liga MX starters like Luis Fuentes, Diego Braghieri, Leonel Miranda and Camilo Sanvezzo in his starting lineup.

Queretaro also used an alternate lineup but played much better in this game than in Tijuana with the home-field advantage. Los Gallos Blancos opened the score in the 22nd minute as Jordi Cortizo capped off a beautifully constructed play by Victor Manuel Vucetich’s team.

Leonel Miranda was then able to tie it for Club Tijuana in the 31st minute as “Lolo” scored a penalty to make it 1-1. The game stayed 1-1 until the second half as George Corral gave Queretaro a 2-1 lead in the 52nd minute with a goal off a free-kick.

The home team kept it going as Gerson Vazquez made it 3-1 in the 61st minute with a strike from inside of the penalty area after a pass by Jordi Cortizo. The Xoloitzcuintles were able to pull one back in the 69th minute as Angel Sepulveda released a long pass that found Camilo Sanvezzo and the Brazilian forward was able to pull off a spectacular finish.

Oscar Pareja brought on Miller Bolanos in the 72nd minute, but it was not enough to come back in the match as the game ended 3-2 in Queretaro’s favor. The game did not lack excitement at the Estadio Corregidora with plenty of goals and the effort put in by Club Tijuana was respectable, considering it was away from home.

The Xolos are now second in Group 2 of the Copa MX with three points and will now refocus on the Liga MX as the Aztec Canines visit Toluca this weekend.
