The Tijuana Zonkeys played Game 2 of their CIBACOPA Mexican basketball playoff series against Gigantes de Jalisco this Wednesday, June 13. Los Burro-Zebras came away with an 87-76 win at the Auditorio Academia Zonkeys in what proved to be a very hard-fought match.

The clash started very close as the first period ended with a 1-1 scoreline, but Zonkeys had a 40-36 lead by the half.

The border city team took advantage of the third period as Tijuana had a sizeable 66-54 lead by the end of it.

Los Tapatios could not revert the 12-point lead by Zonkeys and the game finished 87-76 at the final buzzer. The top point getter of the night for the home team was San Diego native Karim Rodriguez as he posted 22 points with three rebounds.

Mychal Ammons followed Rodriguez with 18 points while San Diego native Richard Williams Jr. led Tijuana in rebounds and assists. The top point getter of the night was Jordan Williams for Jalisco as he posted 28 points, while Branden Dawson was the second-best scorer for the away team with 15 points.

Tijuana’s two-point percentage improved massively from Game 1 as the Zonkeys posted it at 61 percent on Wednesday night. The Striped Donkeys now have a significant 2-0 lead in the series before it shifts to Jalisco, but the series is far from over.

Zonkeys’ head coach James Penny emphasized this after the game. Penny said, “It’s not over. We’re going there, and it’s going to be a hell of a fight, and I believe my team is ready to go.” Games 3-5 will be played in Jalisco, and the series will shift back to Tijuana in Game 6 if necessary. The Zonkeys will need to win two of the three games in Guadalajara to advance to the semifinals of the CIBACOPA, and the skies look very clear at the moment.
