Padres Down on the Farm: June 19 (Abrams continues hot start/Morejon pitches for Soddies/Tri-City with walk-off)

San Diego Padres affiliates went 2-3 on Wednesday.

CJ Abrams continues to put on a show in the desert. Adrian Morejon made a start for Amarillo. The Dust Devils walked-off in the 10th inning.

Here is a recap of the day’s events.

Amarillo Sod Poodles (34-36) Lost 10-5

The Soddies have lost two in a row after clinching the first-half Texas League South title. Northwest Arkansas beat them 10-5 as the bullpen allowed six late runs that were the difference. Adrian Morejon made a start but only went 1.1 innings for Amarillo. Kyle Lloyd relieved him and pitched well at first but was roughed up in the seventh inning. Blake Rogers also gave up three runs in the eighth on four hits. Ivan Castillo continues to be very impressive. His OPS is at .875 now, and he has a .348 batting average for the Sod Poodles. The second baseman adds to the depth the Padres have at the keystone position. Owen Miller and Luis Torrens recorded three hits in the loss.

Matthew Acosta, the Padres 12th round pick out of USC, singled home Luke Becker for the walk-off win on Wednesday against the Hillsboro Hops. Dan Dallas started the game and went two innings pitched, without allowing a run. Deacon Medders relieved him, and the 20th round pick in the 2019 draft threw two innings, allowing one earned run. Starlin Cordero, Felix Minjarez, and Mason Fox all were flawless out of the pen. Minjarez recorded the win throwing the last two scoreless innings. Acosta and Nick Gatewood recorded two hits each in the win.

AZL Padres 1 (2-0) Won 8-0

Chris Given and CJ Abrams were both drafted earlier this month by the Padres, and both have already begun their professional career. After a 4-for-4 night last night to begin his journey, Abrams, the Padres first-round selection went 3-for-6 with two runs scored. He is now hitting a cool .700 to begin his career. Given, the Padres 19th round pick from Xavier doubled and recorded three total hits in the Padres 8-0 win over the AZL Giants. Dylan Coleman made a start and went two innings. The Padres’ fourth round pic last year has been battling an arm injury. He started in Lake Elsinore this 2019 season. Jesus Gonzalez relieved Coleman and threw five shutout innings on Wednesday. The 18-year-old lefty performed well in his debut.

AZL Padres 2 (0-2) Lost 13-6

Padres pitcher Bryan Mitchell made a start in Peoria for the AZL Padres 2 team and allowed one earned run in two innings pitched. He was relieved by Alexuan Vega who was lit up to the tune of four earned runs in two innings pitched as the AZL Padres 2 team lost 13-6. Michell Miliano threw well out of he pen, striking out three in two scoreless innings. Oliber Guzman took the loss, giving up seven runs, three were earned on three hits in 1.2 innings pitched. The AZL team managed ten hits on the night as Ethan Skender and Kelvin Alarcon led the way with two hits each. Skedders is a nice story as he has two years of injuries after being drafted by the Padres in 2016. Taylor Lomack tripled and scored a run for the Padres.

DSL Padres (8-8) Lost 12-11

The DSL White Sox walked-off on the Padres DSL team with a single run off of Alejandro Lugo in the ninth. Lugo entered in a tie game and allowed a run on two hits. Jesus Cisneros made a start and went four innings, allowing four earned runs. The right-handed pitcher from Venezuela made his fourth start of the year and owns a 5.00 ERA. Jessel Soto followed Cisneros with a scoreless inning, but the next two relievers were rocked. Ramiro Batista gave up four earned runs without getting an out. Dwayne Matos allowed two runs in three innings for the DSL squad. Offensively, the team recorded 11 runs on eight base hits. DH Eddyson Moreno went 2-for-3. The 18-year-old left-handed hitter is very small (5-foot-9) but has shown a decent stick at the age of 18. 17-year-old Reginald Dowston recorded two hits in the loss. Jose Velez has a .993 OPS so far in the DSL and hit his first homer on Wednesday. The 17-year-old right-handed hitting outfielder could be one to keep an eye on.
