Here are some quick news and notes for the day at San Diego Padres camp.

Andy Green was asked about Hosmer’s launch angle progression during the presser. “He’s worked incredibly hard to put himself into position. He is ready to go and done everything to have a great season.”

-Green would not name opening day starter. When asked about specifically about Lucchesi, he said: “He has not done anything to earn that opening day start.” There are several pitchers who could be named, but that will likely be weeks away from happening.

Chris Paddack participated in pitchers PFP’s this morning after making an error in Tuesday’s game. When I asked him about it he referred to the error as “a little situation”. We both chuckled.

Nick Margevicius added about 10 pounds of muscle and looks very good. He threw a bullpen session on Wednesday and was very impressive. A.J. Preller was on hand to watch the left-hander.

Franmil Reyes has shed some weight and looks to be in great shape. He is excited to show Padres fans more of his “Swag” in 2019.

Travis Jankowski is a new father. We spoke briefly about the change in his life. He has adjusted his swing a little bit too. He is now using a toe-tap at the plate in an effort to make contact more often.

Cal Quantrill and Anderson Espinoza both looked great in bullpen sessions on Wednesday. Espinoza looks free and easy and Quantrill has renewed pop on his fastball. Both should re-establish themselves as top prospects in the system during the 2019 season.

Brad Wieck is in great spirits after his medical scare this winter. He reported to me that he feels great and is hungry to keep progressing as a pitcher. He is scheduled to throw some more off a mound this week and could be in game action fairly soon if he reports no issues to the medical staff.

Dinelson Lamet and I spoke for a few minutes. He is excited to get going. He told me he is throwing off a mound and is making great progress in his return from Tommy John surgery. He was watching a bullpen session and you could plainly see the hunger in his eyes to get back out there.

Blake Hunt has bulked up in an effort to stay nice and strong for a longer minor league season this year. Expect big things from Hunt in 2019.

Josh Naylor looked very impressive in the outfield on Wednesday. He is clearly not a burden out there and could develop into a decent fielder in time. You really have to give him credit for doing his work no matter where the team puts him.

Aderlin Rodriguez continues to smash. He hit his third homer of the spring on Wednesday. When asked if Rodriguez would see time at third or the outfield in the future, Andy Green said: “not at this time.”

Robert Stock looked good on Wednesday as he pounded the strike zone continually. I asked Green about using Stock in high-leverage situations moving forward and Green’s response was: “I think how we will use him will evolve. He is a guy that can go multiple innings and keep his velocity.”

  1. Good article. Strive to be more interesting than the Padres MLB site. Having the guts to have a comment section is important too.

  2. there is no good reason why a young pro athlete is significantly overweight. and there many good reasons Reyes should be in great shape. he might lose just a little power but he would improve so much in many different areas.
