Denzel Perryman

What can be said about this man? After last season’s week three loss to the Minnesota Vikings, EVT declared that Perryman should be starting. It was obvious to us that Donald Butler was just taking up roster space and collecting a paycheck. Perryman was leading all of the NFL in special teams tackles (at the time) and was all over the field in his limited playing time. He needed to play and thankfully it didn’t take too long for the Chargers to make the move. All though when they finally did put Perryman in, the season was over.

The game of football is one of emotion and momentum. Perryman understands that and has an unlimited motor on the field. He is a ball hawk and a sure tackler to boot. Playing middle linebacker you have to understand the game and be far more than just an athlete. His athletic skills could never be questioned and now its obvious to the Chargers that his football IQ is off the charts as well.

General manager Tom Telesco got an absolute steal when he drafted Perryman. At the age of 22, he looks to be a rock in the middle of the Chargers defense for years to come. The former University of Miami linebacker wore Ray Lewis number 52 in college and he exemplifies the type of player Perryman is. Like Lewis, Perryman is a thinker who is full of emotion and leads by example on the football field.

Last season in 14 games and nine starts, Perryman earned 58 tackles and 2.5 sacks, including two 10 tackle games against the Broncos and Raiders late in the season. As he gets more comfortable with the Chargers defensive scheme, expect Perryman to become a tackling machine. He and Manti Te’o form a great 1-2 punch in the middle of the Chargers linebacking corp. Expect a phenomenal year from Perryman in the 2016 season.
