1984 Padres

” A one hopper to Nettles, to Wiggins… and the Padres win the National League Pennant!…. OH DOCTOR! You can hang a star on that baby!!! ” Just writing or reading those words leaves Padres fans in goosebumps. That call by the immortal Jerry Coleman will surely go down in Padres lore as one of the greatest in team history.

That magical run of 1984 was fueled by fantastic chemistry and the mission to play for their owner Ray Kroc, who had passed away just weeks before spring training started.

The 1984 team had a fantastic mix of veterans and rookies. Steve Garvey, Rich Gossage and Graig Nettles provided veteran experience in the post season and the youth of Kevin McReynolds, Tony Gwynn and Carmelo Martinez brought a sense of fun to the game. The team was well-known as one if the tightest groups in the league. They had fantastic chemistry and had a terrific all for one attitude. If you messed with one player, you messed with the whole 25 man roster. The team brawled in Atlanta against the Braves and that only solidified their unity.

Ultimately the team ran into a buzz saw called the Detroit Tigers. The Padres valiantly took game two of the World Series after losing the opener, but were swept in Detroit and the season ended bitterly for Padres fans. Still the passion from the fans during that season and in particular during the playoff series with the Cubs, was the first time San Diego fans made themselves known. We are extremely thankful for that magical team as they showed all Padres fans that dreams can come true.
